Paul Sant was found dead in his home, slumped on his hallwayfloor. He had died from a gunshot wound to his left eye. The murderer seems to have shot th rough the peephole in the front door. Everything suggests that Paul Sant was mistaken for a namesake.
The optogram also known as the convicting image, originates from a scientific belief during the final decades of the nineteenth century. Following strange ophtalmological experiments, it was proved that the image of external objects imprinted upon the retina of the eye is conserved there indefinitely. The visual organ contains a particular substance, the visual purple, on which the image is fixed in its exact form. It was therefore accepted that to identify the culprit in case of murder, the photograph
on the retina of the victims could depict the last image recorded at the back of the eye at the very moment of death. This belief continues to persist: even today the murderers still destroy the eyes of their victims.
I couldn’t see his face as he was speaking to me. In its place a grey hole. An indelible stain. The focus of my sight forever lost. My gaze is only peripheral. A periphery that I can guess rather than see. No more scarlet red nor azure blue. Colors appear pale and dull. Degeneration of the macula, the small yellow spot at the back of the eye, this is the disease that my eyes suffer from.

Cette croyance perdure : aujourd‘hui encore les assassins détruisent les yeux de leurs victimes.
